I was offered an interesting opportunity to start having delivered daily to my home a very high-quality pre-prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner for $35.99 a day, that averages out to about $7.20 a meal.
With a latte and a muffin it's easy to be at about $7.20 for breakfast. Living in the NYC area $7.20 for lunch is a bargain and $7.20 for dinner every day would be a steal. But I must admit that when I first looked at $35.99 a day it seemed a little high, but broken out it made more sense.
Now home delivery of pre-prepared meals is not a new idea as you can get them from IN THE DELIVERY ZONE, ZONE DELIVERY USA and the CHEF'S DIET to name just a few.
And having been a customer of Nutri-System years ago and Jenny Craig their meals are pre-prepared, but usually you go in and pick them up. But now I think they also will send them to you.
But as I kept pondering the notion of $35.99 a day, I had to do the math...
What would that come out to in a year... so, 365 x $35.99 a day = $13,015.90
$13.015.90
Now I'm not knocking any of these programs because what that little calculation did to me was open my eyes to say that give or take a dollar ot two at every meal I bet if I actually tracked what I spent every day on food in some shape or form I'm easily at $35.99 a dayand truth be told, I think I'd be lucky if that was all my daily average was.
and then...
Since we have 4 adults living in our house... 4 x $13,015.90 = $52,063.60
WOW! $52,063.60, now that's something to ponder.
When our family started practicing "1/2 is more..." it really was a wake up call that without a lot of effort, we could easily order less, still really enjoy what we were eating, and the added bonus was that we had the opportunity to not only have "less on our waist, but more in our wallet".
But I have to admit that after doing the math I think we need to have a family meeting and take a closer look at the reality we're living the in the headline I recently saw on a MINI billboard. it read... "PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS", based on these numbers, we're not only PUTTING OUR MONEY WHERE OUR MOUTH IS, what's eye opening is where is that money's going...

Being a major Starbucks fan, I normally would have had two venti 1/2 cafs today with Silk soy milk. But to start "walking my talk" as I described below, I decided to start having only one venti 1/2 caf a day.
So what's the outcome 1/2 the cost, 1/2 the calories, less on my waist, more in my wallet.
YEARLY CASH SAVINGS : $722.70
YEARLY CALORIC SAVINGS : 36,500 calories... 100 calories less soy milk a day x 365 days = 10LBS+ less on my waist [3,500 calories = 1LB]

Kim, Namrata, Matt and "The Dosa That Almost Ate Montclair..."
Last weekend we invited our friend Namrata to visit one of our favorite "1/2 is more" haunts in Montclair, Updupi Village.
I usually get their paper dosa, and it's big, but not that big.
We think they might have been wanting to show Namrata their dosa prowess.
1/2 or not, they make great dosa's!

I just read"1/2 is More" and I thought it was great. It was easy and quick to read and most importantly, it is a simple idea that is easy to apply. I don't think I will be able to go to a restaurant without thephrase "1/2 is More" going through my head. It's my new "Eating Out Mantra". - Amy www.southernfriedfatty.com

Divide and Dine
Until all restaurants become BYOP (bring your own plate), you'll need to shrink your serving in a different way: When your entrée arrives, dive in and eat half, then wait at least 10 minutes before coming out for round 2. While you chat and sip water, your stomach will have a chance to digest and decide whether you've had enough--no matter what the plate's saying.

With lots of things on our list for the day I never made it to the gym or the hospital to weigh in. First stop, breakfast at one of our favorite haunts Raymonds where we "1/2-ed" our breakfast. We shared scrambled eggs, home fries, bacon and toast. I had coffee with milk and sugar.
From there we had various errands to run. In our travels we picked up some pansy's, something Kim has wanted for years but we always seem to miss getting them when they're around. This year we got'em and planting them proved to be the only real exercise I got for the day as I antiqued some new pots we got with a combination of old paint and rolling the pots in the dirt. Cleaning up a little and shoveling dirt for the pots completed my tasks.
Lunch was leftovers at home, some penne with tomato sauce and sauteed chicken. After lunch we were off to NYC to get some paper for a project and on the way out dinner was quick and easy. Falafels at Mamouns, and we each had one of their little desserts. 2 falafels, 2 desserts, 2 drinks, $7, now how do you beat that in NYC.
We had sneak preview tickets to see "The Hoax" back in New Jersey at 7:30 so we high talied it home. I wasn't hungry but I wanted popcorn so Kim and I split a small bag, and when they say small, they mean small. The movie was pretty good and when it was over I checked Kim's pulse to see if she felt like eating again. She was and as we thought of places to go we ended up deciding to just go home and have a snack before bed instead of eating out. I chose a bowl of Kashi with soy.

I'm really pleased that I tracked everything I did yesterday as even though it takes time, just knowing that you're going to record what you're "eating + thinking" really helps you stay aware of what you're putting in your mouth.
I didn't get the gym this morning as I needed to spend my morning working on my next book, "The Tale Of The Scale" which ever since my scale became posessed and it got relegated to the garage my writing has gotten stronger.
